LOCATION AND CLIMATE
Island Brac (region Central Dalmatia, Croatia) is an island located in Croatian region Central Dalmatia. It is the largest island in Central Dalmatia with area of 395 km2. Island Brac is separated from the mainland with Brac Canal, Split Gates and Hvar Canal.
Island Brac has no rivers. It is divided on mountain and plain part. Island Brac used to be connected with mainland. Tourist destinations on island Brac: Sutivan, Bol, Supetar, Postira, Povlja, Milna, Sumartin, Splitska...
Climate is Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers. It has around 2600 sunny hours a year. Rainfall is more often in inland. Winds that blow are bora and mistral.
Ground of island Brac is consisted of limestone, marl, boulder, sand, clay... Island Brac is known for stone all over the world. Quarter of island Brac is forested. On island Brac you can find rose hip, rosemary, sage, carmomile, caper...
Supetar is the largest settlement on island Brac. It has around 3500 inhabitants. It is connected with Split with ferries. Supetar is administrative and cultural center of island Brac.
Milna is located on west part of island Brac. It was founded in 16th century. Milna is known for sailing ships.
Postira is located on north side of island Brac and it was first time mentioned in 1347. Famous Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor was born in Postira.
Bol is located on south part of island Brac. Bol is known by the most beautiful beach in Adriatic, Zlatni Rat. Bol is the oldest small town on Brac coast.
CULTURE AND ATTRACTIONS
Island Brac has many monuments to visit. It has large number of remains of old basilicas, churches and monasteries. You can also visit some of the castles and palaces of Brac nobels. Famous people working and writing about Brac: Vladimir Nazor, Vicko Prodic, Andrija Ciccarelli, Ivan Rendic... During the summer season there are many traditional concerts, exibitions, shows kept.

HISTORY
It is believed that name Brac comes from Illyrian Brentos which means deer. In a cave Kopacina are foundings that show that deers were on Brac in Prehistory. Island Brac is located in very good traffic position but it never had significant importance in trade and economy. Foundings in cave Kopacina, in Nerezisca and Skripa show that first inhabitants were shepherds and fishermen.
Romans left traces in agriculture, religion and architecture since they occupied this area. Since 313. Christianity is developing and many monuments on island Brac testify that. In 1420. Venetians occupied Brac as well as the whole Dalmatia.
The oldest document of Brac is Povaljska listina from 1184. Most of the inhabitants lived in inland of island Brac. In 16th century Brac was inhabitated with many people running away from the Turks. Priests had important role on island Brac in time of Venetian domination.
After the domination of Russians and Frenchmen, island Brac got under the domination of Austria in 1814. Austria created Kingdom of Dalmatia. In 1827. Supetar becomes the administrative center of island Brac. Island was developing in every ways. In the time of Kingdom Yugoslavia, Brac was not developing and inhabitants emigrated.
During the World War II settlements on island Brac were burnt and destroyed. Today many inhabitants are working in Brac quarry. Island Brac is very famous by its stone. Brac was developing again. It has two shipyards in Sumartin and Milna. Tourism is also very developed.
